What is Dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a broad category used to describe several types of skin conditions depending on the cause. The symptoms of the condition will vary depending on the form but al will have redness, inflammation, itching, and skin lesions.
Contact Dermatitis – caused by an allergic reaction and comprises 80% of all dermatitis cases.
Atopic Dermatitis– a form of eczema and is an epidermal barrier dysfunction. Symptoms usually include dry, itchy skin that is reddened. It is often runs in families and is associated with asthma and allergies.
Dermatitis Herpetiformis – seen in Celiac Disease with chronic blisters. Symptoms include skin that is itchy, stinging, and have a burning sensation.
Seborrheic Dermatitis– an inflammatory skin disorder that effects the sebum-gland rich areas and is generally seen in the hair and along the hairline.
What Causes Dermatitis?
The cause of dermatitis is generally unknown, but some common causes include contact, chemicals, detergents, allergens, ingested drugs or food, health care issues or other causes. Stress can promote the production of cortisol and induce skin irritation and inflammation.
